The Dota Major Championships

The International is drawing closer, and next week we will be releasing The International Compendium, along with a major balance update. Soon after that we will be announcing the teams that will be invited to The International.

Today, however, we would like to talk about our plans for improving the competitive landscape as a whole. As fans of the game, we love watching teams compete in high stakes tournaments, but we also recognize that there is room for improvement on a more structural level. While the lack of roster stability and major focal points during the year had its advantages, it has eventually come at the cost of fan engagement and competitive stability for the players.
The Dota Major Championships, starting this Fall, will be an annual series of four marquee tournaments, one being The International. The three additional tournaments will be Valve-sponsored events hosted by third-party organizers at different locations around the world. Teams that participate in these events will be required to adhere to limited roster trade periods during the year.
As the Fall event approaches, more tournament details will be announced.

6.84 Gameplay Update

Today we are revealing Dota 2’s 6.84 Gameplay Update. Head over to the update page to learn about the various adjustments made to gameplay, the new Aghanim’s Scepter upgrades, new items, and more. These changes are live in the Dota 2 Test Client now, and will be coming to the Main Client later this week.
The International is approaching, and that means the Compendium is on its way. This year’s Compendium will also be available later this week, and will be packed with items, and other rewards you won’t be able to find anywhere else. And if you’re eager to know who you can cheer for at The International, keep an eye on this space; we plan to announce which teams will be invited very soon.

The International Compendium 2015

Be a part of the biggest Dota tournament of the year. Every Compendium-related purchase contributes to The International, with a portion of the sale price going straight into the prize pool.

Stretch Goal Rewards
As the prize pool grows, everyone who owns The International 2015 Compendium will gain access to new features and be rewarded with new items, including Immortals, desert terrain, and more. Stretch goal reward items will be released soon after they are unlocked. And it doesn’t matter when you buy your Compendium; you’ll earn the unlock rewards regardless of when you make your purchase, so there’s never a bad time to join the celebration.

Compendium Challenges & Coins
New for this year are Compendium Challenges, where you complete objectives in Dota matches. Complete a Challenge then win the match to earn Compendium Coins for both you and your teammates. You can redeem coins in your Compendium for item or set drops. There are several ways besides Challenges to earn coins including random coin drops or by using Coin Charms. You can accelerate your coin earning rate with Coin Boosters that you can get by increasing your Compendium Level.

Compendium Levels
Increase your Compendium Level by completing activities or by purchasing Compendium Points to earn more items. As your level rises you can earn more treasures, claim your very own pet item, unlock alternate styles, obtain the coveted World Chasm Artifact item for Enigma, and more. Every 100 Points you earn increases your level. And in case you’re worried about where you’re going to store all these new items, activating a Compendium will add pages to your Armory.
Head over to the Compendium website to get a glimpse of everything you can earn, and track the prize pool. The International is coming. Come and join the fun!

Immortal Treasure I

That was fast.
We have just updated the game with the first Immortal treasure and cursor pack. All Compendium owners should receive them over the next hour or so. Check the level reward schedule to see how to get multiple Treasures.

This treasure includes 7 unique Immortals for Luna, Magnus, Sand King, Spirit Breaker, Pugna, Huskar and a bonus rare Night Stalker item. There is also an extremely rare golden version of the Luna Immortal. Head over to the the Immortal preview page to see short videos of them all.

Compendium Rewards Incoming

To celebrate today’s release of the World Chasm Artifact we’ve put together a comic about Enigma and his new bracers.
The prize pool for The International keeps growing and as it does more rewards are unlocked. As part of this update all Compendium owners will receive their own Effigy Block of The International. Increase your Compendium Level to receive a Reforger Pack, allowing you to rebuild an effigy, and gives you the chance to earn a rare Golden Effigy Block of The International.
Today we’re also releasing a handful of other stretch goal rewards including a HUD skin, Loading Screens, Emoticons and the Arcana Vote.

The International Teams

The time has come to announce the teams that will be competing at The International and its Regional Qualifiers. We’ll be revealing this year’s teams progressively over the next couple hours. If you want to follow along as it happens, go to our announcement website.
We’re also excited to introduce a new component to The International, the Open Qualifiers. Now, you too can battle to earn a place in Seattle this summer for a chance to compete against the best teams in the world. FaceIt (Americas, Europe, Southeast Asia) and Perfect World (China) are organizing four Open tournaments (one per region) each crowning a champion that will receive an invite to their associated Regional Qualifier. Register your team by following the links at the bottom of the announcement page.

Compendium Ward & Taunt Treasure Unlocked

As we have just passed the 6.5 million dollar stretch goal, with today’s update Compendium owners will find an eerie new ward and a treasure containing many new taunts in their backpack.
New for this year, these taunts are able to be used while your hero is moving. The Manual of Fearsome Moves contains taunts available for the following heroes: Magnus, Batrider, Rubick, Clockwerk, Zeus, Luna, Shadow Fiend, Troll Warlord, Tidehunter, Skywrath Mage, Gyrocopter, and Sniper.
Also, with invitations now complete, we’ve just finished giving out the prediction rewards, so open your Compendium to see how many you got right.

Compendium Progress

The International prize pool is already halfway to the 15 million dollar mark in just 10 days, with 90 days to go. We’re still working on building the second set of Immortal items, but they’re not quite ready yet. We know the most important aspect of these Immortals is their quality level, so we are also planning on spending some extra time polishing them rather than releasing them quickly.
You’ll still see an update to the Compendium this week though. Included in that update you’ll find new challenges, the Item Recycling system, and new ways to earn Compendium Points.

Compendium Level Up

Today’s update brings new ways to earn Compendium Coins and Levels.
The Ten Hero Challenge returns from last year, and gives all Compendium owners the chance to earn additional Compendium Levels by winning matchmaking games with a selection of heroes. The Ten Hero Challenge can be completed up to three times with a different selection of heroes for a total of 450 points (4.5 Levels).
We’ve also brought back Item Recycling. Whenever you recycle any 10 items, you’ll earn 25 points toward a Compendium Level as well as a Charm of the Crucible Jewel II. There are also three Compendium Achievements for Charms to help you earn more Compendium Points. If you have extra TI5 Compendium Immortals, you can consume them to gain two Compendium Levels by right-clicking on them in your Armory.
All Compendium owners will now have an additional slot for hero-specific challenges in their list of in-game challenges, which will award both Compendium Coins and points toward Compendium Levels when completed.
Now that Team invites are out, don’t forget to vote for your favorite players to participate in this year’s All-Stars event. Completing this task will grant you 50 Compendium Points.

Dota 2 Short Film Contest

Aspiring filmmakers, the time has come. We’re throwing the doors open on the Dota 2 Short Film Contest.
Filmmakers will have until the morning of July 13th, 2015 to submit their entries to the contest. The winning films will be featured as part of The International broadcast, and each winner will earn $20,000. Entries must be less than one minute long, so be sure to make every second count. Head over to the Dota 2 Short Film Contest site to learn more information on the submission guidelines and process.
Everyone else, head over to the contest voting page and tell us which videos you would like to see showcased at The International.

The International Qualifiers

The International Qualifiers begin next week. Be sure to catch all the action as the America and China qualifiers begin on Monday the 25th. The America qualifiers will start at 17:00 GMT, with the China qualifier beginning at 02:00 GMT.
Then, tune in on Friday the 29th for the Europe and Southeast Asia qualifiers. The Europe qualifier gets going at 10:00 GMT, while the Southeast Asia qualifier commences at 02:00 GMT.
Head to The International invites site to see which teams are competing in each qualifier, then make your predictions in your Compendium.
The winners of each qualifier will be given a direct invite to The International, while each of the second place teams will battle it out for the final two invites.
You’ll find English and Russian language coverage for The International qualifiers over at Twitch.tv, with Chinese language coverage available here.
Who will emerge victorious, and be invited to compete at The International?

New Compendium Rewards & Spectator Effigies

Immortal Treasure II has been released, bringing exclusive new items to Compendium owners. The Immortal Treasure II contains items for Anti-Mage, Disruptor, Faceless Void, Leshrac, Shadow Fiend, Sven, and Tinker. Increase your Compendium level to earn more treasures and complete the set.

Compendium owners will also receive the Wyvern Hatchling courier. You can give it a new look by increasing your Compendium level, with the Fire Style unlocking at Compendium Level 25, and the Gold Style unlocking at Level 200.
Head over to the Compendium site to see everything in action.
Meanwhile, you may have noticed that we’ve rolled out a special drop system for The International matches, including the Qualifiers. Major events in a match where we would have previously dropped a normal item will now drop an effigy featuring the triumphant hero, or a random team member in the case of a group accomplishment. The effigies will be built from a random material (including the rare Solid Gold material), and will come ready to be posed using the preset hero and equipped items the player was using at the time.
Live spectators will also have a chance to earn coins, coin charms, and Compendium points toward levels. Additionally, every Compendium owner will have a chance to receive an effigy celebrating the victorious team whenever a live match ends, even if they weren’t watching. The higher your Compendium Level, the higher your chance to receive one of these effigies.

The Collector’s Cache

Available for purchase exclusively to Compendium owners, the International 2015 Collector’s Cache costs $1.99 and gives you another chance to contribute to The International prize pool as you claim 11 community-created, Mythical sets. The Cache also has a 1 in 250 chance to contain the Immortal Faceless Rex courier. The Collector’s Cache will only be sold until the end of The International.
Opening a Collector’s Cache also gives you several ways to increase your Compendium level. The first time you open a Cache will earn you 2 levels, when you open 5 Caches you’ll earn 5 levels, and you’ll earn 11 levels when you open 11 Caches. There’s also a chance that a Cache will contain an item that grants 11 Compendium levels. Additionally, each set from the Collector’s Cache can be recycled for two levels.
These sets won’t be sold elsewhere, and won’t be available on the market or for trade, though they can each be gifted once. The Faceless Rex courier, however, is fully tradable and marketable.

Dota 2 Reborn

Today we are announcing the Dota 2 Reborn Beta, which brings with it a new interface, new engine and Custom Games. Everything in the dashboard has been completely redesigned utilizing a new UI framework, and the engine that powers the game has been fully replaced. On today’s update page we will be giving you a preview of the new interface. Early next week we’ll be talking about Custom Games, and later that week we’ll conclude with various details about the new engine and launch the open beta.
Throughout the beta we’ll be releasing frequent updates in order to fix bugs and make changes based on the feedback you provide. As you browse around in the new client, you’ll notice a few things that aren’t fully functional yet. Additionally, our focus has been on the dashboard so you’ll find the in-game HUD currently looks the same.
We want you to help us during the beta with your suggestions and bug reports. Our intention is to keep gameplay and heroes looking and feeling the same, so if you find anything unexpected please let us know. We’ll be bringing the update out of beta some time after The International to ensure we have enough time to respond to all of your feedback.

Dota 2 Reborn: Custom Games

Custom Games are new experiences that are created by the community, and playable within Dota 2. These games can be anything from a grand brawl between ten Invokers, to a story-driven dungeon adventure, to something creative that no one has seen before. For us, Custom Games represent a continuation of the tradition that gave birth to Dota, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike. We’d like to build an ecosystem where you can experience something new every time you launch Dota 2.
If you’d like to begin creating a Custom Game of your own, you can check out the second part of the update site to learn more about the ecosystem we’ve created.
Later this week we will explore some underlying technology of the new engine.

Dota 2 Reborn: The Beta Begins

The Reborn beta is now available for everyone to download and play. Check out the update page for installation instructions and to learn about a number of new technologies that we’re using to improve Dota 2.
Unlike our traditional Test client, your match history, MMR, cosmetic items, and friends are shared across the two versions. However, Ranked Matchmaking is not enabled yet. We anticipate that we’ll be able to turn it on in a few days, but we need more testing of the basic functionality first. Also, it is possible new items may make their first appearance in either the beta or the main client. These items may be temporarily missing from the other client while their assets are converted.
As you explore the beta, you’ll notice a few features aren’t fully functional yet, but we encourage you to play regularly and send us your feedback. We’ll be updating the client frequently over the coming weeks as we bring everything online.

Compendium Music & Announcer Packs

Ready to battle with epic new music as Dota’s meanest porcupine provides the play-by-play? The International 2015 Music Pack, composed by Jeremy and Julian Soule, has been released for Compendium owners along with the Bristleback Announcer.
Thanks to you, The International prize pool has reached an incredible $15 million dollars. We will be delivering the remaining stretch goal rewards as soon as they are ready. In the meantime, be sure visit your Compendium and have your say in the Arcana vote, which is down to just four contenders: Juggernaut, Queen of Pain, Tiny, and Zeus.

The Collector’s Aegis of Champions

With The International just around the corner, we’d like to announce an exclusive reward, the 2015 Collector’s Aegis of Champions. The Collector’s Aegis is a 1/5th scale alloy replica, with antique brass plating, of the winner’s trophy at The International. Inscribed on the back with the year and a gold finished insignia signifying this year’s theme, the Collector’s Aegis is a symbol to reward those whose Compendium Level has reached 1000.

After the conclusion of the grand finals of The International, we will send the Collector’s Aegis to all players with a Compendium Level of 1000 or above. Additionally, when in a Dota match, the Aegis of Champions in the player’s fountain will have a special glow effect that lasts until the next International.
If you have a Level 1000 compendium by the end of the Grand Finals, you can fill in your shipping information on this website.
In other Compendium news, the Immortal Treasure III is almost ready for release. We will be releasing it and the additional Compendium Pet style by the end of the week.
The International 2015 has become the biggest event in Dota’s history, and one of the largest events in competitive gaming. This wouldn’t be possible without the continued support and passion from everyone in the Dota community.

Immortal Treasure III & New Pet Styles

Immortal Treasure III has arrived. Exclusive to Compendium owners, Immortal Treasure III contains new items for Bristleback, Gyrocopter, Witch Doctor, Invoker, Nature’s Prophet, Meepo, Templar Assassin, and Zeus. If you’re lucky, you could earn a golden version of Gyrocopter’s immortal item, or a golden style unlock for Almond the Frondillo. Increase your Compendium level to earn more treasures and complete the set.

We’ve also released an alternate style for Almond the Frondillo. If your Compendium has reached level 125 or higher, you’ll receive the Red Style unlock.
Head over to the Compendium page to see them all in action.

Secret Shop Pre-Orders & Pubstomps

If you’re attending The International, we’re happy to announce that this year you’ll be able to pre-order all the new Dota 2 merchandise that will be available at the Secret Shop, and then claim your order at KeyArena. If you won’t be attending, you’ll be able to purchase Secret Shop merchandise online shortly after The International.

In the meantime, be sure to vote for your favorite submissions to the Dota 2 Short Film Contest. The voting period ends this Friday, July 17th.

The International Approaches

Today we’re launching The International website where you can find info about the dates and this year’s format. We’ll be updating the site throughout the event, starting with the Group Stage team distribution on July 22nd after the players arrive in Seattle.
We’re also launching the beta of DotaTV’s Live Streaming, which you can find in the new Watch section on Dota2.com. Games are broadcast at up to 1080p at 60 frames per second and feature real-time stats, graphs and match data. The Watch section gives you quick access to the most-viewed Dota matches currently being streamed through Steam Broadcasting. The full broadcast for The International will also be available for viewing on this new platform.

Dota 2 Reborn: Ranked Matchmaking

With today’s update, we’ve enabled Ranked Matchmaking in the Dota 2 Reborn beta. You can now complete Compendium Challenges as well, and doing so in the Reborn beta gives you 50% more coins. While we were at it, we also imported a number of items, including everything from the recently released Immortal Treasure III. Plus, we’ve made a number of other improvements and fixed long list of bugs, which you can check out on our beta updates page. Don’t forget to send us your feedback as you explore the beta.

Evil Geniuses: Grand Champions

Congratulations to Evil Geniuses, Grand Champions at The International 2015.
It’s been a long road for the victors. Battling in the Group Stage, Evil Geniuses secured a top position within their grouping. However, at the same time, the underdogs of CDEC Gaming were making a name for themselves. A runner-up at the China Qualifier, CDEC fought their way into the tournament through the Wild Card, and were ultimately tied with Evil Geniuses by the end the Group Stage.
At the Main Event, CDEC dominated the upper bracket, winning every match, eventually knocking Evil Geniuses to the lower bracket to advance to the Grand Finals. In the final day of The International, Evil Geniuses beat LGD Gaming to earn their way to the Grand Finals through the lower bracket, securing a rematch against CDEC Gaming in the process.
In the Grand Finals, CDEC’s win streak finally came to an end. As the dust settled, it was Evil Geniuses who stood triumphant, defeating CDEC Gaming 3-1.
A new Grand Champion has been crowned, and a new inscription will be set upon the Aegis of Champions:
2015
Evil Geniuses
Clinton “Fear” Loomis
Syed “Suma1l” Hassan
Saahil “UNiVeRsE” Arora
Kurtis “Aui_2000″ Ling
Peter “ppd” Dager
There were more great stories and incredible games at The International than we can possibly recount. If you’d like to relive the action, head to The International site, where you’ll find replays for every game. You can also check out photos and videos from the event on Flickr and at our media page.
We’d like to thank all of the teams, and everyone in the Dota community for helping to bring year’s tournament to life. Like you, we look forward to The International every year, and without you this amazing event wouldn’t be possible.

Prepare for The Majors

This fall, a new tradition comes to the world of professional Dota. The Majors are a series of four seasonal marquee tournaments culminating in The International. The first Major will be occuring in Europe this November and we’ll have more details on ticketing soon.
Ahead of this Major, there will be Open Qualifiers from October 6-9, and Regional Qualifiers from October 10-13. Any team may participate in an Open Qualifier, and two teams from each region will be among those invited to participate in the Regional Qualifiers. The Regional Qualifiers will then determine several of the teams to be invited to battle at the Major. Direct invitations to the Major and the Regional Qualifiers will be announced on October 5th.
If your team would like to be considered for an invitation to either the Regional Qualifiers or the Major directly, head over to the registration site for more information. Any team that makes changes to its roster after September 5th 2015 at 12:00AM PDT cannot be directly invited to the Regional Qualifiers or Major, and must compete in the Open Qualifiers.

Coming Soon: The Reborn Update

With The International behind us and the Majors just around the corner, we are excited to have the world start playing Dota in the brand-new Source 2 engine. Within the coming weeks, the main client will receive the Reborn Update. Moving away from the Source 1 engine soon will allow us to better focus our efforts entirely on Source 2 in preparation for various upcoming tournaments. There are still a few features that will need some work when the update is released, but we plan to finish them quickly. Expect the weeks that follow to focus on ironing out issues, refining the dashboard and iterating based on your feedback. Afterwards, we’ll begin shifting our attention toward the in-game UI, where we plan to redesign the HUD and work on a variety of other in-game features.
Today’s update to Reborn contains various bug fixes and improvements, as well as a large number of backend changes that result in a very large one-time download. Now would be a good time for everyone to start downloading the Reborn update, as you will not need to download it again when the main client receives the update in the coming weeks.
If you do not have the Reborn update installed and would like to get a head start on it now, launch the Dota client and head over to the Play Tab to get set up. All of your items are now in the Reborn client, and after today any new content will be added directly to Source 2 only.

Introducing Dota Levels

As part of today’s update we’re unveiling Dota Levels, the culmination of all of your accomplishments in Dota. Dota Levels are displayed as a badge on your Dota Profile based on your level, and are gained by earning trophies and playing matches. You can learn more about Dota Levels here.

We’re also releasing the new Treasury and enabling the Tournaments area of the Watch section. The Treasury can be found in the Heroes section, and allows you to quickly browse, explore, and purchase treasures. The Tournaments area is where you’ll be able to view matches and tournament details. We’ve also made a number of other small adjustments and bug fixes, which you can read about here.
Today we are rolling out a preload of the Reborn Update to all players that have not previously downloaded it. The Reborn Update will be coming to the main client for all Dota 2 players in the next day or two.
Additionally, if you purchased a Compendium for The International 2015, today you will receive the exclusive Harvest, Pestilence, and Sirocco Weather Effect items. We are still working on the Axe Comic/Immortal, as well as doing some tech work needed to support the Desert Terrain item. They will be granted to all Compendium owners as soon as they are ready.

Reborn has arrived

As of yesterday, all Dota 2 players are now running the Reborn update, which includes the Source 2 engine, a rebuilt UI, and Custom Games. Over the coming weeks we’ll be updating the game frequently to fix issues and refine the experience based on your feedback. You’ll be able to find patch notes in the usual place once again.

In today’s update we’ve included a design-related change to the Dashboard. We’ve integrated the friends list in the Home screen, while still having it be available globally. We debated making this change during the earlier part of the beta, but we didn’t have enough confidence that it was correct until we got more feedback following yesterday’s release.
Click here to read up on all the other fixes and improvements that are part of this update.

Announcing The Frankfurt Major

Over the last five years, The International has become the pinnacle moment for the world of professional Dota. Now the excitement of the biggest event in esports is coming to the Majors, a series of seasonal marquee tournaments, which will take place throughout the year and around the globe. Dota’s newest tradition begins this fall with the Frankfurt Major.
The first Dota Major will take place over six days at Festhalle Messe in Frankfurt, Germany from November 16 through the 21st. It will feature 16 teams all competing at the main event for a total prize pool of $3,000,000, and will be produced by ESL.
Attendance to the Frankfurt Major will be open to the public and will not require a ticket for any day except for the day of the finals, which will take place on Saturday, November 21st. Tickets to the Frankfurt Major Finals will be sold in two separate waves this Sunday, September 27, the first at 11:00am CEST and the last at 7:00pm CEST. Each ticket will cost €50, and will be available here.
The teams that will be directly invited to the Frankfurt Major and its Regional Qualifiers will be revealed on October 5th. The Open Qualifiers will be hosted by FaceIt and Perfect World and will take place October 6 – 9, with the Regional Qualifiers occurring October 10 – 13. Open Qualifier registration will open to any Dota players who wish to compete on October 1st.
In other Dota news, we are doing some work on the underlying map rendering tech for the desert map terrain in order to make sure it is built in a compatible way for future iterations. Our first longform comic, which will come with the release of the Axe Immortal, is going to be much bigger than our previous comics.
Over the coming weeks we’ll be working on UI improvements based on the feedback we’ve received and releasing our first seasonal Compendium. You can also expect to see the 6.85 game balance update later this week.

Gameplay Update 6.85 and More

Gameplay Update 6.85 is here, bringing various balance changes to heroes and items ahead of the Frankfurt Major. You can read the Gameplay Update notes here.
We’ve also reorganized the home page to incorporate several new features.

Neighborhood Channels are a new feature in the chat panel, providing an easy way for you to join the Dota community in your area, find new teammates, and make new friends. Neighborhood Channels are joined automatically whenever you launch Dota. They are currently enabled in select regions, and will be rolling out to rest of the world over the next few days.
The chat panel is also now embedded directly into the home page, and will remain open whenever you’re in a lobby. Additionally, two new panels have been added to the home page: the first showing a recap of your most recent game, while the other highlights the most-spectated match currently being played.
There are a number of other features and fixes included with today’s update. Head over to the patch notes to learn all about them.

The Fall Season 2015 Compendium

Today we are introducing The Fall Season 2015 Compendium. In addition to Challenges and Level Rewards, we have introduced a new Coin Wagering system. Players can wager their coins on the outcome of their match. Wagering members of the victorious team will each win a percentage of the Coin Pool based on the amount of their maximum wager compared to the rest of their team.
Compendium Coins can be earned by completing challenges, achievements, random drops, leveling up your Compendium, using Coin Boosters and recycling. You can redeem coins inside the Compendium for items, sets, or a treasure. The treasure contains exclusive new items that are divided into three tiers of rarity. In the Armory, you can use lower tier items to craft a higher tier reward.
Increase your Compendium Level to earn new couriers, treasures containing sets with unlockable ambient effects, an Artifact item for Tusk, new Cache treasures, and more. Check out the Fall Season Compendium website to learn more.
This all leads up to The Frankfurt Major, where sixteen teams will battle for a fixed $3,000,000 prize pool from November 16 through the 21st. Tickets to The Frankfurt Major Finals can be purchased here.
